Beschreibung
Sri Chinmoy was first and foremost a spiritual man, and he saw his art-works as spontaneous expressions of deep inner realities. Through writing, music, athletics, art and philosophy, Sri Chinmoy has shown how a spiritual life can help to awaken our inner and outer potential.
Born in Bengal, north-east India, he was brought up in an ashram in southern India where he spent many hours in meditation and pursuing spiritual activities. In 1964, Sri Chinmoy moved to New York, where he lived up until his passing in October 2007.
Sri Chinmoy began painting in the West on November 19th, 1974. He was on a tour in Canada to offer public meditations at universities in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. While in Ottawa, he was inspired to purchase some paper and crayons, and in his hotel room he began to draw. His first picture was a simple rose (see picture on previous page), but from these humble beginnings Sri Chinmoy immersed himself in his new-found project, completing thousands of new paintings in the following year. He named his new artistic endeavour “Jharna-Kala”, which is Bengali for “Fountain-Art”, and he signed his drawings and paintings “C.K.G.”, which stands for Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, his full Indian name.
Sri Chinmoy’s first 1,000 drawings and paintings were exhibited for one day only on December 28, 1974 at the Unitarian Church of Hollis in Queens, N.Y. Nearly 500 students and art lovers came to appreciate these unique creations. Throughout the day, the artist sat behind a table inscribing copies of the iconic photograph of himself drawing the rose, to give to all attendees.
This book offers a selection of reproductions from this very early stage, mainly the period of November 1974 up to October 1975. There are five chapters: Flowers, Animals, Beings, Crayons and Abstracts. Enjoy these special early drawings and paintings.
